Fossil creek waterfall trail length8/24/2023 ![]() The Bob Bear Trail provides access to the headwaters of the Fossil Creek Wild and Scenic River and the Fossil Springs Wilderness on the Tonto and Coconino National Forests. This should be done to all such remote and beautiful places people visit, so it doesn't happen to anyone else at any other places prevention is better than cure. The Bob Bear Trailhead is accessed via Fossil Creek Rd from the town of Strawberry. We hope the authorities which take care of this area (county or parks&rec) puts proper warning signs and if possible a blue box to call 911 as cell phone coverage is limited, lifesaving jackets and rope to avoid such incidents. Hope this review help to take proper precaution before jumping into water and no such incidents happens again. Also keep in mind that cell phone coverage is limited and nearest town is strawberry which is 10-12 miles where 4-5 miles is unpaved so any help you get will be at least 40 minutes. Please take this waterfall VERY SERIOUSLY as this is not the only incident happened and there were 2 other incident that happened at same location within 1 year time frame. ![]() We found their bodies after 18 hours of drowning when helicopters came in with divers next morning as it got dark. We had an accident in October 2016 where we lost 2 of our dear friends who got drowned because of whirlpool created by waterfall and water sucked them and kept them near the bottom of the fall. Waterfall also creates a whirlpool near the fall and hence it is difficult to swim near that area (again there are no signs). Please beware that this is not as easy as it looks as there is sudden drop in height near waterfall and it gets deep (~20 feet according to officials). There are no warning signs what so ever near the waterfall on how deep the water or how slippery the bottom is. We took the waterfall hike which is 2 mile round trip. ![]() It is indeed very beautiful and scenic depending on what hike you pick. Please read this review fully as we want to share what happened to us and want to make sure that it does not happen to anyone else. Water is amazingly clear and so refreshing. REMEMBER STAY WITH THE DRY CREEK BED AND FOLLOW OTHER PEOPLES TRACKS.you will get there. You will cross over a few little 'wooden bridges'.that is how you know you are close. Just remember keep following the dry creek bed until it dead-ends at the main waterfall. You will see many little trails to the waters edge (the rope swing access is about 17 minutes into the hike). You will follow a dirt path (partially shaded) for about 5 minutes before it starts turning into more of a dry creek bed path. Once you park at the WATERFALL lot, you will need to GO UNDER THE GATE AND WALK UP THE ROAD (NOT the trail at the back of the lot) uphill for about 5-8 minutes until the fence on your left opens up to a REAL trail-head. Just have your driver take it easy around the many, many curves and you will be ok. The road itself doesnt have a lot of protruding rocks, it's just roughly graded. The trip (as others have stated) will take an hour to the waterfall lot.the total mileage traveled from 260 to the waterfall lot is a little less than 17 miles). Once you get thru that, you have approx 14.5 more miles to go until you get to the WATERFALL TRAIL PARKING LOT (*there is 1 more check in station about mile 14). When we turned onto the road into Fossil creek, a mile or 2 into the drive, there is a park ranger check-in area.they will stop you and ask for your permit. You will need a parking lot permit.$10 and can only book a month out during the summer months (). THE 1 HOUR BUMPY DRIVE AND 30 MINUTE HIKE in 108 degree weather are soooo worth it! (IF YOU ARE A NATURE LOVER AND A FAN OF SWIMMING HOLES!!).
